In Todays Thrift Flip Challenge I try To Improve The Japanese Tote Bag From The MM6 Maison Margiela Collection. The triangle bag is made from a neoprene mesh material, but we sew a bag from recycled materials, our old damaged jeans. In this denim bag tutorial we upcycle old jeans into a bag and create a beautiful shopper from jeans.
We start with ripping the old jeans in strips, pulling a few threads out to create a frayed edge on denim and than sew them together on the sewing machine. I created the easiest pattern with straight lines from 35 and 45 cm, but did some small pattern adjustments later to make it fit better. After I sewed the denim strips together, I went over the seam allowance with a medium wide zigzag stitch, to prevent the seams from fraying too much. Than, when everything finally fitted on the pattern, I cut the fabric out and ended up with 4 triangles. I put them together, as shown in the margiela bag picture. Than I upcycled old curtain by making them into the lining. A lining is kinda optional for this shopper bag but if you make one, id recommend also adding a facing to prevent the lining from popping out and make it look much more professional. I sewed a lining with facing with a frayed raw edge to the inside of a bag, also adding a zig zag stitch here. than I sewed the tops of the bag together securely by going up and down a few times. For the handle I added some small strips of jeans, zigzaged them together and than sew them onto the handles, the seam allowance raw edge, pointing to the top so that it nicely flows over from the seam allowance on the sides. I really recommend this diy denim bag tutorial as it is not that hard to get right, and it is so easy to find old jeans cheaply when you ask family and friends for example.
